KINK GONG IN IKSK

I met Laurent Jeanneau in Paris in 2004 as he had already been on his unconventional DIY path of music composition, recording and performances for 5 years.

I have witnessed his radical passion for the music of minorities from Asia and Africa which brought him to the production of over 160 recordings, released on his own label “Kink Gong“ (Tanzania, Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam). He has also released 4 albums on the French label “Akuphone“, 8 albums on “Sublimes Frequencies“ (USA) and 11 of his "Remix" compositions, with “Discrepant“ (UK).

We are very pleased to welcome Laurent in IKSK, for a monthly listening session with sounds, photos, videos and stories from his KINK GONG production.

Once a month, Kink Gong will invite to listens to a selection of his “Remix Compositions“ and right after he will guide into an archaeologic journey, where we will discover one by one, the original sources of his pieces : the traditional music of the minorities, he recorded during his long and passionate work as DIY ethnomusicologist.

25.05.2022// KING GONG XINJIANG

KINK GONG will present some of his recomposed tracks from the album XINJIANG released by Discrepant in 2010 based on his original recordings in Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) in May and June 2009. In this show Laurent will share a wide collection of his video.

21.04.2020: TIBETAN BUDDHISM TRIP

KINK GONG will present some of his recomposed tracks from the album TIBETAN BUDDHISM TRIP and guide us into an archaeologic journey, where we will discover one by one, the original sources of his pieces : the Tibetan Buddhist rituals in Yunnan and Tibet.

TIBETAN BUDDHISM COLLAGE BY KINK GONG
Most of the Tibetan Buddhist culture accessible in western countries, has been recorded by western people among the Tibetan refugees based around the Dalai Lama in northern INDIA.

Here we are presenting MADE IN CHINA recordings, between 2006 and 2013 of various Tibetan Buddhist cults, it s a collage based on original recordings published on KINK GONG records, including some discreet electronic treatment.

Kink gong will share, as well, stories from his encounters with the musicians of these ethnic minorities and show photos and videos from his private collection.

11.02.2022: Tanzania

KINK GONG will present some of his recomposed tracks from the volume TANZANIA and guide us into an archaeologic journey, where we will discover one by one, the original sources of his pieces : the traditional music of Tanzanian ethnic minorities.

In 1999 he joined James Stephenson in Tanzania, who had been living in the 90s with the HADZAs, some of the last bushmen (hunters/gatherers), he also recorded other tribal music like the DATOGAs and the MAKONDEs. A double CD came out on French label <musiques du monde> in 2003, then in 2015 a recomposed vynil LP on London based <discrepant> and a double LP of raw recordings on American label <sublime frequencies> were released with success (all those products are sold out).
He will share, as well, stories from his encounters with the musicians of the ethnic minorities, and show photos and videos from his private collection.

14.01.2022: Screening of “Small Path Music“ + ZOMIA album vol 1.

On January 14, we will start our journey into into Kink Gong world, with the documentary “SMALL PATH MUSIC“ who follow his trips in South-East Asia (52 min).

Right after the projection, Laurent will decorticates the film's tracks and present the album

ZOMIA album vol 1.

He will share, as well, stories from his encounters with the musicians of the ethnic minorities, and show photos and videos from his private collection.

More on : Kink Gong

In the immense world of music, Laurent Jeanneau is without a doubt a unique character. This is due, partly, to his multidisciplinary DIY approach towards music, and also to his adventurous spirit that has been keeping him - and the Kink Gong project - active for several decades so far.
His large collection of ethnic minority music is made of things that are probably completely foreign to most of us. He spent a considerable amount of time recording it, mostly in South East Asia, and releasing the results on his own CDr label, Kink Gong Recordings, as well as occasionally contributing to Sublime Frequencies compilations. He also composes electronic music that manipulates, assembles and reconstructs those recordings, in order to create new soundscapes, which often seem ahead of their time. The results can be found in back catalogues from imprints such as Akuphone, ArteTetra, Discrepant or Atavistic.Under the name KINK GONG you find 2 activities, the 1st one is to record ethnic minority music mostly in south-east Asia, the 2nd is to transform, collage, recompose the original recordings into experimental soundscapes.
